In this edition of Where Are They Now? we have the pleasure of introducing you to Gurleen Kaur (Class of 2019).
Gurleen began her journey at Hume Anglican Grammar in 2010 as a Year 3 student. After graduating from Hume, she pursued her passion for justice and legal advocacy by enrolling in a Bachelor of Law. Reflecting on her law school journey, Gurleen shares that it was both challenging and rewarding. After years of dedication, she successfully completed her degree in December 2023.
February 2024 marked a personal milestone for Gurleen as she celebrated her marriage.
In September 2024, she achieved one of her proudest moments when she was admitted as a lawyer and authorised officer of the Supreme Court of Victoria. This milestone reflected her hard work and dedication to the legal profession, having transitioned from a Paralegal to a practising Solicitor at Banga Legal.
Can you provide us with a snapshot into your daily routine?
My daily routine is a balance between my professional responsibilities and personal wellbeing. A typical workday begins with reviewing any updates on my current cases, followed by drafting documents, conducting legal research, and attending meetings or court appearances. Working in the legal field, which is constantly evolving, means I have to stay updated on the latest legislative changes, legal trends, and relevant case law. I make it a point to set aside time each day for reading legal updates and following global developments that could impact the cases I'm working on.
Outside of work I enjoy swimming, which helps me stay active and gives me a chance to clear my mind. I make sure to spend quality time with my husband as well as my cats, who are a big part of my routine as well—they bring a lot of joy and balance to my days. Staying grounded with these personal activities helps me maintain a healthy balance between the demands of my professional and personal life.
What is your fondest memory of your time at Hume Anglican Grammar?
One of my fondest memories from Hume Anglican Grammar was the sense of belonging and community that I experienced throughout my time there. Whether it was during House competitions, group projects, or just hanging out with friends during lunch breaks, I always felt supported by both my peers and teachers.
The encouragement I received helped me to grow academically and personally, and those moments of laughter, teamwork, and shared achievements will stay with me for a lifetime. Hume Anglican Grammar is a place that shaped me to become the person I am today and the place that helped me discover the person I wanted to be.
How has your time at Hume Anglican Grammar influenced your likes and pathways after school?
I am eternally grateful for my VCE Legal Studies teachers at Hume Anglican Grammar, particularly Ms Rosendale and Mrs Farrugia. Their passion for the subject and their dedication to teaching truly shaped my path. If it weren't for their guidance and support, I honestly don’t know where I would have ended up. Their influence sparked my interest in the legal field, and looking back now, I cannot imagine being anything else but a lawyer. It was through their guidance that I discovered my passion, and for that, I will always be grateful.
