Prep - Year 2 Family Maths Night - Mt Ridley

On Monday, 7 November Prep - Year 2 families and students were invited to participate in a Family Maths Night run by Mathematics Consultant, Colleen Monaghan and supported by Primary staff. The evening was a huge success with over 200 parents and students participating in the workshop.

Parents were given an overview of how Mathematics is taught in the Primary school and then visited a number of classrooms to play a range of maths games with their child/ren. The games were predominantly play-based using concrete materials and estimation. Making maths fun was a significant emphasis on the evening with lots of tips given to parents on how to engage their children in daily maths, based on everyday experiences. Using mathematical vocabulary appropriate to the situation was also a key element of the evening.

I would like to pass on my appreciation to our Head of Teaching and Leaning, Helena Mallon and her curriculum team for planning and organising the session and of course to all of the parents and students that attended. The Years 3 - 6 Family Maths Night is on Thursday, 17 November and is sure to be equally beneficial and rewarding to those who participate.

The large number of attendees certainly sent a strong message about the types of experiences and opportunities they would like to be offered in future. With this in mind, please look out for further ‘hands-on’ sessions in the new year.
