Over the course of Semester 1, a large number of students signed up to participate in chess practice on Wednesdays, and the chess tournament on Fridays at lunchtime. It was great to see a vast range of students from across all year levels participate and interact about a common interest.
The chess tournament was a great success with students playing a range of matches in Term 1 to accumulate points with our top 16 moving on to the elimination rounds in Term 2 listed below:
- Manraj Dhanoa
- Sohan Kodlapura
- Arjun Ghai
- Yuvraj Singla
- Jeremy Papaioannou
- Jaismeen Thind
- Aaditya Saini
- Vishal Kuchu
- Austin Jaisto
- Christian Zoiti
- Aniketh Yella
- Tamanno Zavqieva
- Abinav Karki
- Gurpreet Dhillon
- Benjamin Keily
The final round was played on Monday, 17 May with Yuvraj Singla and Arjun Ghai making it all the way to the finals. There were many surprises and big upsets along the way but both players had not lost a match for the duration of the tournament thus far. A big congratulations to Arjun Ghai for winning this semester’s tournament, the prize being a $30 gift card and handmade rook trophy which were awarded at assembly.
I would like to extend a big thank you to Sohan Kodlapura who organised the ins and outs of the Chess Club this semester (from creating the rule set to making the winning trophy). We hope to see many more participants in the next Chess Club tournament.
