What a great term we’ve had so far in Year one at Donnybrook! Students have been learning about the features of Information texts, to publish some themselves later this term. They have also enjoyed listening to the teachers read some Julia Donaldson books such as ‘The Gruffalo’, ‘Room on the Broom’ and ‘What the Ladybird heard’. They’ve been using these books to learn about rhyming words as well as making predictions and connections, using details from the story to help them better understand the text. Students have also been working on sequencing events from a story as well as identifying and following punctuation, to ensure their reading is smooth and with expression.
In Maths, students have been revising their skip counting skills as well as building on their understanding of how two-digit numbers are made up of tens and ones (place value). They’ve also been learning various strategies to help them solve subtraction sums, such as using number lines, counting back and drawing pictures when solving subtraction worded problems. Students have also been learning about 3D shapes and identifying them in our world. They will also be exploring the features of 3D shapes such as faces and edges.
In Inquiry, students have loved learning about Minibeasts through hands on investigations as well as the website Epic reading, to help research and find interesting facts about insects such as worms, ants and snails. We have also been lucky enough to secure stick insects and snails to keep as class pets, so students can further observe and investigate these mini beasts.
