During the recent term break, Nikhil, a Year 11 student and the Vice-captain of Craigie House, embarked on an exciting journey by attending the International Future Leaders Academy.
This academy, known for its transformative leadership training, spans across New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific Islands.
Joining forces with 45 other dynamic young leaders, Nikhil headed to the Cook Islands for a 10-day program aimed at honing essential leadership skills and building connections with like-minded individuals. Upon arrival, participants were divided into smaller groups called Syndicates, each led by a dedicated coach.
From organising daily living needs to tackling formal challenges, every aspect of the intensive 7-day course was student-driven, fostering problem-solving, initiative, time management, organisation, and critical thinking skills.
Nikhil enthusiastically took part in a variety of activities, including:
Engaging in real-life case studies at a local tourism business, where he and his peers proposed solutions.
Embarking on a Survival Island Adventure, solving the challenge of navigating a river safely and constructing shelters.
Conquering the Needle Hike in Rarotonga, where teamwork and determination were key to scaling the difficult ascent.
Contributing to a community service initiative by participating in a beach cleanup with his Syndicate.
Beyond his leadership aspirations, Nikhil has a deep love for the outdoors and thrives on long walks in nature. Unsurprisingly, his favourite activity during the program was the hike, where he motivated his fellow Syndicate members to embrace the beauty of their surroundings.
Reflecting on his experience, Nikhil shared, "Participating in the community service activity was truly eye-opening. The pollution we discovered on the seemingly pristine beach served as a reminder of the impact humans can have on even the smallest of islands. It reminded me how important it is to look after our planet.”
