Year 3 Humanities, Science and Technology
Our students in Year 3 have been busy at work, exploring and extending their Science knowledge and understanding as we investigate the 3 states of matter. We have also learned about the fourth state of matter, plasma. Plasma is produced when gas is heated to an extremely high temperature. Lightning is an example of the lesser-known state of matter.
Jissimran and Jocelyn have captured their learning with a reflection to share their experiences thus far.
Visit to the Stem Centre
During Week 3, we visited the new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Centre. We met Mr Sharma, the Secondary school Head of Faculty - Science, who taught us more about matter. We then explored the Science Lab, finding beakers, funnels and more. We completed a booklet on the states of matter and dressed ourselves into blue lab coats and wore safety goggles. Then we were asked the question, ‘What would melt ice the fastest’? We tested sugar, salt, cold water, warm water and heat from our hands. We experimented and not all the results were the same. We found that the warm water was the quickest but were also surprised by the effect of salt.
Mad about Science Incursion
Recently, we participated in the ‘Mad about Science’ incursion where Lisa, our instructor, taught us more about the four states of Matter. We did some crazy experiments which included exploding a sandwich bag. We used white vinegar and a teaspoon of baking soda to do this fun experiment. We also used dry ice which stings a lot like a burn if you touch it. The year is going to be a great success and we are so curious about what’s next!
