Excursions to Enhance Learning in Humanities
Places of worship – a National Park – a feast of Renaissance Art. Week 4 was certainly an action-packed week within the Secondary Humanities Faculty! The week commenced with all Year 9 students embarking on a trip to four different places of worship in the north of Melbourne as part of their World Religions Unit in RAVE. Students were able to witness firsthand, the rituals and customs of other faiths as they visited a mosque and Sikh, Hindu and Tibetan Buddhist temples, building on their knowledge and understanding in class.
The VCE Unit 1 Geography students on Wednesday took a trip to Kinglake National Park to collect primary data as part of their fieldwork report assessment task on the 2009 Black Saturday Bushfires. While fieldwork is an integral part of any study of Geography, the opportunity to work in the ‘world’s laboratory’ enables students to observe the impacts of geographical processes in situ and apply their learnt theory. All students commented how much fun it was being out of the classroom, and how having alternative learning experiences cements their understanding in a real-life context.
Finally, students in Year 9 who study The Renaissance had the wonderful opportunity to visit the National Gallery of Victoria to study Renaissance artwork and enhance their appreciation of this historical period.
We are very lucky at Hume Anglican Grammar to be able to offer such a variety of learning experiences within the Humanities Faculty and there are still more to come during the course of 2022!
